Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
TUAPSE, a port and seaside climatic station on the eastern shore of the Black Sea at 48° 17' N latitude and 39° 6' E longitude, on the right bank of the Tuapsinka River. The gorge of the Tuapse River runs from a pass on the main Caucasian ridge and ends at the sea in a wide basin. Until 1926, Tuapse was on the list of resorts of national importance and possessed a sanatorium, sea baths, and a polyclinic. At the present time, Tuapse has almost lost its resort significance and has been excluded from the list. Recently, Tuapse has been acquiring great importance as a port and industrial city, especially in connection with the construction of the Grozny-Tuapse oil pipeline. The Tuapse resort region encompasses a strip from the Nechepsukho River, located to the north of Tuapse, to the Ashe River. This includes: Anju—a seaside climatic station 40 km from Tuapse, with three sanatorium institutions and a base of the Society of Proletarian Tourism and Excursions (OPTE); Glubokoye—8 km north of Tuapse, on the seashore, with fruit orchards and vineyards; Lazarevskoye—at the entrance to the Psezua-pse River gorge, with a large number of vineyards; Magri—24 km from Tuapse; Novo-Mikhailovka—40 km north of Tuapse, on the seashore, at the mouth of the Nechepsukho River, with a long, golden sandy beach. In the area immediately adjacent to Tuapse, localities with natural resources are: Kadosh, Agoy, Dzeberkoy, and Doderkay, which are subject to use as recreation bases. The climate of Tuapse, compared with the more southern part of the coast, is moderately humid. The average annual temperature almost coincides with that of Yalta. The distribution of meteorological elements by month is indicated in the table. The average annual temperature in Tuapse is only 0.5–1° lower than in Sochi, mainly due to the higher temperature of the winter months in Sochi, while the temperatures of the spring, summer, and autumn months almost coincide. Compared with Gagra, Tuapse has a significantly cooler summer. In the gardens of Tuapse and its surroundings, there grow in large numbers cypresses, thujas, mimosas, laurels, yuccas, magnolias, and certain types of palms, vineyards, etc. For referral to the Tuapse resort region, the following may be indicated: initial forms of tuberculosis without fever, without a tendency to hemoptysis, chronic fibrous forms, initial forms of tuberculosis of the larynx, catarrh of the upper respiratory tract, glandular tuberculosis, mild neuroses, and metabolic diseases. Contraindicated are: rapidly progressing forms of tuberculosis with large destructive phenomena, cases with a tendency to hemorrhages and hemoptysis, caseous pneumonia, sharply pronounced tuberculosis of the larynx, tuberculosis of the intestines, kidneys, and other organs, and disorders of cardiac and renal activity.
