Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

GAGRA, a seaside climatic station on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus, 75 km by highway southeast of Sochi. The high, stern ridges of the Main Caucasus Range (1,850 m above sea level) closely approach the sea and form a narrow coastal strip 5-6 km in length, turned into a wonderful park with subtropical vegetation. Therapeutic means: mild climate, good beach, and sea bathing. Average annual temperature +15°; average winter temperature +8°, summer +22°. Polyclinic with electro-photo-hydrotherapeutic department, warm sea baths, and an X-ray room. Sanatorium, boarding houses, rest homes, hotels. Season is year-round. The resort is under the jurisdiction of the Main Health Resort Administration of Abkhazia.
