Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)

Excursions, a method of mass cultural and educational work, which combines the 'local and motor' principles (Raykov), i.e., familiarization with certain objects and their study at their location, along with movement through space. In the USSR, in connection with the general growth of Soviet culture and the increasing demands for knowledge from the broad masses, excursion work received wide scope and covered hundreds of thousands of excursionists studying new construction sites, the natural beauty of the USSR, etc. Excursions have great importance in close connection with physical culture as a moment of hardening and exercise of the body (mountain, water excursions) (see also Tourism). Sanitary excursions are one of the important methods of sanitary-educational work, which makes it possible to familiarize with a number of objects on site. Excursions with a sanitary-educational object can be in 3 directions: 1) to museums-exhibitions on sanitary education, houses of sanitary culture; 2) to medical and preventive institutions: resorts, dispensaries, sanatoriums, prophylactoria, etc.; 3) to sanitary institutions: water supply, irrigation fields, slaughterhouse, disinfection base. Along with this, sanitary excursions are also conducted in general museums, where, for example, in an art museum, a number of paintings can be used for a corresponding sanitary conversation, then to new construction sites, dormitories, communes, cooperatives, etc.
