VERBOV BANDAGE
Historical document, translated for reference. It reflects medical knowledge of the 1920s–30s and is not medical advice.
Summary
The Verbov bandage is an abdominal support device designed to assist women during childbirth by preventing abdominal wall stretching and providing support to the contracting uterus. It was developed based on Verbov's 1912 law of peristaltic movement of the uterus and has been shown to ease and accelerate labor while reducing surgical interventions and infant mortality.
Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
VERBOV BANDAGE, an abdominal binder intended to assist the parturient woman during the expulsion period. The action of the bandage is based on the law of peristaltic movement of the uterus, formulated by Verbov in 1912. According to the author's concept, the bandage should prevent stretching of the abdominal wall and provide support to the contracting uterus, enhancing its expulsive capability. The V. b. consists of two halves connected to each other by a system of cords passed through rings; the front shield is reinforced by steel plates sewn into the fabric. American Beck (A. Beck) proposed a nearly identical bandage, but both of its halves are connected immovably by special buckles. The bandage is applied to the abdomen of the parturient woman, and during the bearing down efforts in the expulsion period, it is tightened, and with the end of the contraction, it is relaxed again. The action of the bandage is controlled by the parturient woman herself. The bandage can be used in all cases of normal deliveries, with occipital and breech presentations. In pathological deliveries, the indications for it coincide with those for forceps. Contraindications: marked disproportion between the head and pelvis, diseases of the heart and kidneys. Experience has shown that the V. b. facilitates and accelerates labor, reduces the percentage of surgical intervention, decreases morbidity in mothers and mortality in infants. The postpartum period proceeds normally. In contrast to pituitrin, the action of the V. b. can be stopped at any moment. Lit.: Verbov Ia.
