SHEVKUNENKO, Viktor Nikolayevich (born 1872), Honored Scientist, recipient of orders. He graduated from the Military Medical Academy in 1895 and was retained for advanced training at the hospital surgical clinic of Professor Ratimov. In 1898, he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medicine, "Modern Treatment of Clubfoot" (St. Petersburg), after which he was sent abroad for advanced training by competition (England, France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Switzerland, and North America). He continued working in the surgical clinic until 1913; from 1905, he began working at the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy. In 1907, he was elected private docent, and in 1912, professor of the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy at the Military Medical Academy, a position he holds at the present time. Since 1928, he has been a professor at the Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians in Leningrad. During the Russo-Japanese War, the Imperialist War, and the Civil War, he worked on the evacuation of the wounded and the organization of surgical aid. He is a member of the International Society of Surgeons, an honorary member of the Pirogov Surgical Society in Leningrad, and of the surgical societies of Moscow, Kharkov, Tashkent, Irkutsk, the Leningrad Urological Society, and others; he is a member of the board of the All-Union Association of Surgeons. Shevkunenko is known as the founder of the doctrine of typological and age-related human anatomy. Over 300 scientific works, produced by the department he leads, are devoted to these issues. Based on data from typological and age-related anatomy, he and his students and staff have developed rational operative approaches. This doctrine has been confirmed by numerous studies by Soviet and a number of foreign scientists. He reorganized the teaching of operative surgery and topographic anatomy, bringing it closer to the tasks of clinical practice and practical training, and introduced the performance of operations on animals in an operating room setting into the teaching of operative surgery. The departments he leads serve as a school for surgical clinicians and teachers. Over 140 people have participated in research work, 25 of whom hold chairs. Under his editorship, the first Russian 3-volume major manual on operative surgery and a manual on topographic anatomy, compiled by his students, were published. He has published 40 scientific works on issues of clinical surgery, operative surgery, and typological anatomy, printed in the form of monographs and articles in Russian and foreign journals. He carries out significant public work in various organizations.
