ZYGOTE (from the Greek zygon—yoke), the product of the fusion of two gametes, i.e., sex cells or individuals. Thus, a zygote is any fertilized egg of animals or plants, and in the case of protozoa, a fertilized macrogamete or the product of the fusion of isogametes. Zygotes of algae are more often called zygospores.
