Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
CHOKORA APPARATUS (mill) (Chokora), an apparatus for grinding detritus (raw scrapings; see Smallpox Detritus) (fig. 1), designed by the Viennese mechanic Chokora according to the principle of roller mills and following the instructions of the director of the Smallpox Vaccination Institute in Vienna.
The Chokora apparatus for grinding smallpox detritus (after Lautenschläger).-.. Paul. It is a closed glass receiver on all sides, thanks to which during the entire grinding procedure from beginning to end the detritus remains protected from contamination (dust, bacteria, etc.) from outside. The apparatus is most often made with a water (turbine) or electric motor (the latter is more convenient), is easily cleaned and sterilized (by chemical means, also in an autoclave, etc.). In Austria, the apparatus is no longer produced, meanwhile the mills of Chokora himself are good; their German imitations, for example produced by the firm Lautenschläger (fig. 2), are significantly inferior to the original (less effective, spray the emulsion on the walls of the vessel, etc.). About 50.0 grams of raw scrapings are placed in the mill at the same time; to obtain a fine emulsion from this amount, grinding for at least 6-8 hours is required. Chokora mills are also successfully used for grinding dry bacterial masses in the production of tablets used for vaccination per os.
