Dieffenbach, Johann Friedrich (Johann Dieffenbach, 1792-1847), outstanding German surgeon. The greater part of his life D. devoted to the development of plastic surgery, achieving great perfection in this field both in experiments on animals and in treating patients through the transplantation of various tissues for all kinds of deformations. D. also worked extensively in orthopedics, developing and proposing several methods of subcutaneous tenotomy and other operations on bones and joints. D. was considered an outstanding teacher and lecturer, attracting numerous listeners to his clinic in Berlin. D.'s main works: "Nonnulla de regeneratione et transplantatione" (Würzburg, 1822); "Chirurgische Erfahrungen, besonders über die Wiederherstellung zerstörter Theile des menschlichen Körpers nach neuen Methoden" (Vol. 1-4, B., 1829-34); "Über die Durchschneidung der Sehnen und Muskeln" (B., 1841); "Die operative Chirurgie" (Lpz., 1844-48).
