Arthur Loos (1861-1923) was a prominent German helminthologist who established the department of parasitology at the Cairo medical school. He discovered the phenomenon of hematogenous migration of hookworm larvae and established that nematode larvae can actively penetrate intact skin.

LOOS. Arthur (Arthur Loos, 1861-1923), the greatest German helminthologist, who conducted his work based at the Cairo medical school, where the department of parasitology was established. Loos discovered the phenomenon of hematogenous migration of hookworm larvae; he was the first to establish the ability of nematode larvae to actively penetrate through intact skin coverings. Loos's monographs on ankylostomiasis, schistosomiasis, his brilliant work on strongyles of horses, and his large series of works on trematodology are considered classical works. The main works of Loos on medical helminthology were published in Zentralblatt für Bakteriologie (1. Abt., 1897-1904). Loos is the author of a number of chapters on parasitic worms in major guides, such as: in "Handbuch der pathogenen Mikroorganismen", ed. by W. Kolle and A. Wassermann (1st and 2nd ed., Jena, 1902-09, 1912-13); "Handbuch der Tropenkrankheiten" ed. by C. Mense (1st and 2nd ed., Lpz., 1905-06, 1913-1923), and in "Handbuch der mikrobiologischen Technik", ed. by R. Kraus and P. Uhlenhuth (Vol. III, Vienna, 1924).
