FÜLLEBORN Friedrich (Friedrich Fülleborn; 1866-1932), a talented German parasitologist, known for his classic works in the field of experimental helminthology. F.'s activity is closely connected with the development and flourishing of the Hamburg Tropical Institute, where he worked for 32 years, holding the position of head of the helminthology department, and in his later years - director of the institute. The main works of F. are devoted to tropical helminthology: filariae, schistosomes, hookworms, strongyloidosis. F. subjected microfilariae to detailed study along the lines of morphology, development cycle in the bodies of intermediate hosts - mosquitoes, diagnosis, clinical manifestations, epidemiology, and chemotherapy. His monograph on filariae (Handb. d. pathogenen Mikroorganismen, hrsg. v. W. Kolle, R. Kraus u. P. Uhlenhuth, B. VI, Jena-B.-Wien, 1929) is considered classical. Being a skillful experimenter, F. developed many ingenious devices and instruments that found wide application in the technique of helminthological research and laboratory practice. From 1920, F. turned to the study of the problem of hematogenous migration of ascarid larvae and published a series of brilliant works with broad biological generalizations. Such are his works on the permeability of blood capillaries for nematode larvae and their advancement through the ciliated epithelium of the respiratory tract (1925), on experimental intrauterine invasion in ascariasis (1921), on the migration routes of ascarids (1922), and the large synthetic work on the behavior of Strongyloides, hookworm, and ascarid larvae in the host's body and attempts at its biological justification (Arch. f. Schiff- u. Tropenhyg., B. XXXI, Teil 2, Lpz., 1927). In 1925-26, F.'s works appeared on the tropisms of hookworm and Strongyloides larvae, on the method of isolating these larvae from other nematodes possessing thermotaxis, on specific skin reactions in strongyloidosis, on creeping disease associated with percutaneous invasion by nematode larvae. In his later years, F. published a brilliant monograph "Haut und Helminthen" (Handbuch der Haut- u. Geschlechtskrankheiten, hrsg. v. J. Jadassohn, B. XII, T. 1, B., 1932), in which an exhaustive material was summarized, both from his own research and from literary data. Being a major specialist in helminthology, Fülleborn combined in himself the qualities of a brilliant organizer and an excellent teacher.
