Summary

This article defines the micron as a unit of length used in microscopy and spectroscopy. It provides conversion factors between microns, millimicrons, millimeters, and centimeters.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

MICRON (abbreviated designation µ), a unit of length used in microscopy and spectroscopy; 1 µ = 0.001 mm. In spectroscopy, a smaller unit is more often used—the millimicron (mµ); 1 mµ = 0.001 µ. Thus, 1 mm = 1,000 µ; 1 µ = 1,000 mµ. Or 1 µ = 10-3 mm = 10-4 cm; 1 mµ = 10-6 mm = 10-7 cm.
