WHARTON, Thomas (1610–1673), a famous English anatomist; studied medicine in Cambridge, Oxford, and London. Wharton became famous for his works on the structure of glands and the umbilical cord; he also discovered the excretory duct of the submandibular gland (ductus Whartonianus), described in Adenographia sive glandularum totius corporis descriptio (Londini, 1656).
