VOLHARD Franz (Franz Volhard), known physician, specialist in kidney diseases, born in 1872 in Munich, worked in Giessen, Dortmund, Mannheim with Prof. Fahr (pathologist), Halle, in recent years in Frankfurt—His dissertation (1897) was devoted to the experimental and clinical study of the pathogenesis of eclampsia, and his habitation work to the fat-splitting enzyme of the stomach, but his main fame came from his monograph on kidney diseases, where together with Fahr he gave a classification of kidney diseases, most accepted at the present time (Volhard F. u. Fahr Th., «Die Brightsche Nieren-krankheit», B., 1914; Russian ed.-Minsk, 1923). V. together with F. Suter belongs to the fundamental monograph on kidney diseases and urinary tract diseases, constituting Volume VI of the famous «Handbuch der inneren Medizin», hera-usgegeben v. G. Bergmann u. R. Staehelin. Berlin, 1931).
