Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

Epithelioma, a general name for various epithelial tumors, mostly of the skin. While some authors (Kauffmann) apply this term only in relation to benign epithelial tumors of the skin, others distinguish between benign and malignant epitheliomas, though for malignant cases it is more correct to use the general term carcinoma. Yamagiwa applies this term to all epithelial tumors instead of the designations 'adenoma', 'carcinoma'. Epitheliomas of the skin can develop from its glandular appendages and from the covering epithelium (see Adenoma, Basalioma, Skin, Carcinoma). Contagious epithelioma (epithelioma molluscum) - see Molluscum contagiosum.
