ETHER-VALERIAN DROPS, T-ra Valerianae aetherea (Ph. VII), a tincture of valerian root (see Valeriana, Medicinal plants), prepared with alcohol and ethyl ether. Preparation and properties - see Tinctures. A commonly used sedative, 10-30 drops per dose. Also used as a symptomatic remedy for stomach diseases, and for fainting as a mild stimulant. With aqueous solutions gives opalescence or cloudiness due to the precipitation of valerian essential oil and ether. E.-v. d. are also valuable as a solvent, e.g., for camphor preparations.
