GEGENBAUR, Karl (Karl Gegenbaur, 1826-1903), German anatomist, known particularly for his works in comparative anatomy. He studied in Heidelberg, where under the guidance of Kölliker and Virchow the first steps of his scientific education took place. Wishing to devote himself to the study of anatomy and comparative anatomy, G. spent a year on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea in Sicily, where he became acquainted with the anatomy of the lower vertebrates inhabiting the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. In 1858 he took the chair of anatomy in Jena, from where in 1873 he moved to the same chair at his home university in Heidelberg. G.'s main works: "Untersuchungen uber Pteropoden und Heteropoden" (Lpz., 1855); "Untersuchungen uber die vergleichende Anatomie der Wirbelthiere" (Hefte 1-3, Lpz., 1864-72); "Grundzuge d. vergleichenden Anatomie" (Lpz., 1859); "Lehrbuch der Anatomie des Menschen" (Lpz., 1883). The last book went through many editions. G. is the founder of "Morphologisches Jahrbuch" and "Zeitschrift fur Anatomie und Entwicklungsgeschichte".
