Gubarev, Alexander Petrovich (born in 1855), a European-named gynecologist-surgeon, honored professor at 1st Moscow State University, Doctor of Science honoris causa of Dublin University (since 1911), chairman of the Obstetrical-Gynecological Society at 1st Moscow State University, and one of the founders and editors of the journal 'Gynecology and Obstetrics.' He graduated from the medical faculty of Moscow University in 1882. For several years he worked in Moscow at the department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy, and since 188$ he served as prosector at the department of descriptive anatomy and worked on gynecology under the guidance of V. F. Snegirev. Since 1893, Gubarev was director of the Obstetrical-Gynecological Clinic in Yuryev. In 1897, Gubarev moved to Moscow, where he took over Snegirev's chair and became director of the gynecological university clinic. He published over a hundred scientific works, among which: 'Uber den Verschluss des menschlichen Magens an der Cardia' (Arch. f. Anatomie und Physiologie, Anatomische Abteilung, p. 395-402, 1886), in which G. proved the presence of a sphincter; 'Surgical anatomy of the abdominal cavity and operations for internal intestinal incarceration' (dissertation, M., 1887) - new data on the topography of the parietal peritoneum and the attachment of abdominal organs; 'Operative gynecology and the foundations of abdominal surgery' (3rd ed., M., 1928) - a work awarded the Bush prize in 1910 and which played a major role in the development of surgical treatment of female diseases; 'Obstetrical research, external and internal' (3rd ed., M., 1922); 'Medical gynecology' (4th ed., M., 1928). Of great value are the numerous works by G., scattered in periodicals: on ligation of a. uterinae, on the anatomy of m. levatoris ani, on the topography of pelvic cellular tissue, on operating without preliminary ligation, on acute abdominal disease, on the surgical significance of newly formed vessels in ectopic pregnancy and tumors of the abdominal cavity, etc.
