HUMP (gibbus) is a manifestation of a whole range of diseases and injuries of the spine. Mentions of the hump can already be found in Hippocrates in connection with the disease which, since the detailed description by Pott (1779), became known as malum Potti. The hump arises both in tuberculosis and in other inflammatory and non-inflammatory diseases of the spine. Most frequently, the hump is encountered in tuberculous spondylitis (see Spondylitis and Rickets). Cardiac hump, see Heart defects.
