Monastyrsky Nestor Dmitrievich (1847-88), prominent surgeon; graduated from gymnasium in Chernovtsy, and then the University of Vienna. For several years he worked in Billroth's clinic; in 1875 he moved to Russia. He participated in the Russo-Turkish War, worked in the Petrovskaya hospital. Having distinguished himself through a series of works, especially in surgery (one of the first esophagotomies in Russia - 1881, operation for genu valgum according to Oston - 1880, etc.), in 1885 he took the position of professor of surgery at the Yelena Institute and here proved himself as a brilliant surgeon and talented teacher (gave courses to doctors). M. was one of the first in Europe to begin (together with another student of Billroth - Winivarter) to develop surgery of the bile ducts. Of his works, the lectures "On the modern treatment of wounds" (St. Petersburg, 1886) and "Modern views on the pathology and therapy of joint inflammations" (lectures, St. Petersburg, 1887) are particularly popular; before the book by Vyeliaminov, this was the best work on joint diseases in Russia.
