Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

ASSISTANT (from Latin assistere - to be present, to assist), a helper or collaborator working alongside a highly qualified specialist. Usually this term is applied to professors' staff members in scientific and educational duties at departments of higher educational institutions and institutes (see Medical education). Assistants were also young physicians doing their residency at hospitals (however, it is more correct to call them trainees). Assistant in a pharmacy - see Pharmacy personnel.
