DOFLEIN, Franz (Franz Doflein, 1873-1924), a prominent zoologist and protistologist, a student of R. Hertwig. From 1898 to 1912, D. worked at the Zoological Museum of the University of Munich. In 1912, D. took the zoology chair at Freiburg, which had been vacated after A. Weismann. In 1918, he moved to the zoology chair in Breslau, where he was also director of the Zoological Museum until his death. During his scientific career, D. published over 100 works in various fields of taxonomy, morphology, cytology, and physiology of animals. His works and summaries on protozoology, which brought him worldwide fame, are particularly significant, especially his "Lehrbuch der Protozoenkunde" (4th ed., Jena, 1916), now being reissued; it is not only an excellent textbook but also a reference work on protozoology. Together with Hesse (R. Hesse), D. also published the widely circulated and renowned two-volume summary "Tierbau und Tierleben" (Lpz.-W., 1927). He authored several works concerning the problem of aging and death of organisms.
