Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
Eysk, a city and resort of the North Caucasus region, located on the eastern shore of the Sea of Azov at an elevation of 18 meters above sea level, at the base of a spit extending into the sea. To the east, the city borders a liman, and to the south, a strip of fruit gardens and vineyards covering more than 200 hectares. The climate is moderately warm. Hot summers are moderated by the proximity of the sea and the large number of gardens. The average annual temperature is +10.8°C, with an average summer temperature of +21.7°C. Precipitation usually does not exceed 400 mm per year; the number of days with precipitation averages 108-110; cloudy days occur almost exclusively in autumn and winter. The temperature of the sea water in the liman ranges from +17.7°C in May to +28.1°C in July. The therapeutic means of the resort are: a sulfur-hydrogen-salt spring, mud, sea beach, and sun and air baths. The spring temperature is +11.8°C. Mineralization is 4.14 g, hydrogen sulfide-0.0587 g, sodium chloride-1.5715 g per liter, radioactivity 10.44 units. Mache, flow rate-369,000 liters per 24 hours. Therapeutic mud is delivered from Khan Lake, 37 km from Eysk (the lake is 18 km long, 3-6 km wide, with significant mud reserves). The narrow spit separating the sea from the liman forms a good sandy beach. The bottom of the sea and liman is sandy. Due to the shallow depth of the sea, the water warms up very quickly and its temperature remains quite constant. The swimming season is from mid-May to September. Medical facilities: a sulfur treatment center with a capacity of up to 1,000 procedures per day, an inhalation room, a mud treatment center with a capacity of up to 600 procedures per day, a polyclinic with electro-light therapy department, X-ray and laboratory. Patients are accommodated in a sanatorium, guesthouse, hotel, and in inexpensive rooms of the municipal housing and local residents. Indications: diseases of the motor organs, gynecological, metabolic (gout, obesity), nervous, chronic poisoning, etc. Season from May 16 to September 15. Transportation to Eysk from Rostov by railway is about 175 km or by steamer-about 125 km.
