HILDEBRAND, Otto (Otto Hildebrand, 1858-1927), German surgeon. His surgical education was received from the famous surgeon König in Göttingen, from where he moved to the University of Berlin, soon taking charge of a polyclinic at Charité. After briefly serving as professor of surgery in Basel, H. took charge of the surgical clinic in Berlin in 1904, remaining at its head until 1927. H.'s works covered the most diverse areas of surgery. While working in Basel, H. extensively studied goiter and Basedow's disease. A number of interesting works were published by him on joint diseases. Shortly before his death, H. described his method of operation for atrophy of the optic nerve due to tower skull (Turmschädel). H. was long-time editor of 'Archiv für klinische Chirurgie' and other journals. H.'s main works: 'Grundriss der chirurgisch-topographischen Anatomie' (Wiesbaden, 1900); 'Erfahrungen über den Kropf und seine Behandlung' (Berliner klinische Wochenschrift, 1906, No. 51); 'Beitrag zur Chirurgie der hinteren Schädelgrube' (Archiv f. klinische Chirurgie, Vol. 156, 1912); 'Eine neue Operationsmethode zur Behandlung der durch Turmschädel bedingten Sehnervenatrophie' (ibid., Vol. 124, 1923); 'Experimenteller Beitrag zur Lehre von den freien Gelenkkörpern' (Deutsche Zeitschrift f. Chirurgie, Vol. 42, 1895); 'Die Entstehung des Gelenkhydrops und seine Behandlung' (Archiv f. klin. Chirurgie, Vol. 81, 1906).
