Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
COMBY Jules (Jules Comby, b. 1853), a prominent French pediatrician. His hospital work took place at the children's dispensary (La Villette), the Trousseau Hospital, and finally at the Hopital des enfants malades, which K. left only after many years of service. At present, K. is extensively engaged in scientific and literary work. He possesses an exceptional style—simple, clear, precise, and beautiful. He continues to serve as the chief editor of the journal 'Archives de medecine des enfants', founded by him together with Tranché, Hutinel, Marfan, Sevestre and others in 1898. He publishes in each issue the most interesting reviews (revue generale) of some question in pediatrics. K. is an expert in medical literature, especially American and English; broadly educated and knowledgeable in all areas of pediatrics, as evidenced by the textbook on childhood diseases he wrote ('Traite des maladies de l'enfance', Paris, 1920). Together with Tranché, Marfan and others, K. actively participated in the compilation of the extensive collective guide on pediatrics ('Trait6 des maladies de l'enfance', sous la dir. de J. Comby, J. Grancher et A. Marfan, 1-re ed., P., 1897, 2-me ed., P., 1903-05); here K. wrote the chapters on diseases of the respiratory and digestive tracts, skin, adrenal glands, urinary organs, diseases of newborns, etc. Despite his advanced age, K. continues to regularly appear before the Paris Pediatric Society. His capacity for work is remarkable: in total, he has written more than 400 works in all branches of pediatrics.
